Pilgrim Guidelines

let people know

Always let someone know your itinerary, preferably with locations and days.

the ideal backpack

To enjoy the journey in a more harmonious way, take only what is strictly necessary in your backpack. The ideal backpack must be well assembled, inside and out. In other words, it is essential, when filling it out, to check from the outside if any part of the fabric is loose, a sign of an empty place and, therefore, misuse. Ideally, it should be fully stretched, with clothes, equipment, and food filling it entirely. Heavy materials should be placed against the back, allowing the backpack to have a relatively high center of gravity, ideal for carrying it. Keep your lunch, anorak (waterproof jacket) and water handy, as well as other things you use frequently. Finish packing your backpack with the food that, in addition to being heavy, should be used on the first day. Technical backpacks for hiking have an adjustable belly strap, which provides comfort, in addition to transferring most of the load to the hips. As well as an adjustable chest strap, which increases movement stability.

How is your body?

Check your physical condition before taking the walk.

Get ready by training.

Clothes and shoes

The hiker must wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the practices.

In training, wear the shoes with which you intend to walk the Franciscan Ways.

Foot care is very important.

spare clothes

It is advisable to bring extra clothes and shoes to avoid hypothermia on cold and/or rainy days.

For hot days, wear light clothes and, in any season, use sunscreen.

suitable equipment

The equipment to be used varies according to the person. There are stores specialized in adventure activities, but when in doubt, consult people with experience and always opt for the minimum necessary.

Anticipate reservations

Make reservations for accommodation and food services before starting the hike, so you don't take unnecessary risks.

Weather forecast

Keep an eye on the weather forecast to make your hike as productive as possible.

Drinks and food

Carry water, isotonic, fresh or/and dried fruit, cereal bars and crackers.

If possible, eat a more hearty, carbohydrate-based meal a day.

Do not leave residues along the way. Gather them in bags and take them to the nearest dump.

Do not feed wild animals.

Do not make fires (use stoves).

Respect the residents of the region.

secure your supplies

Buy the necessary products in urban centers or at the points indicated in the guide, as in some stretches there are no markets, restaurants and other support services.

Attention to distances

Pay attention to the distances, altimetry and the classification criteria of the routes described in each leg/day of the walk.

Certificate

To acquire the certificate of completion of the route, it is necessary that the pilgrim's passport is stamped with at least 6 stamps per segment in total. You can pick it up at the Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, in the Jardim das Acácias neighborhood, in Teófilo Otoni or at the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, in Itambacuri, by prior arrangement.
